volcanic activity: Italy
Italy is the only country in mainland Europe to be volcanically active. It has many volcanos in the country, it has 13, such as Mount Etna, Vesuvius, and Vulture to name a few. They are located south of the boundaries of the Eurasian and African plates. A super volcano known as Campi Flegrei is been inactive for 500 years but has now been put on scientific monitoring because the temperature has been increasing and signs of gas breaking. It is located southwest of Naples. This volcano is begin monitored unlike the one in Pompeii when it erupted in 79 A.D. by Mount Vesuvius. It killed thousand of people and covered them with hot ash which in cased them in it. It has become a very popular spot to check out in Italy. The way to be safe if a volcano does erupt in Italy is to move away from the area and if the volcano to be monitored so if it does erupt, the people can leave the area. Italy has three zones for volcanoes red, yellow, and blue. The red the worst and yellow is the second and blue is the safest meaning no activity. Yellow means activity and needs to be watched, and red zone is it is ready and citizens need to be evacuated. For more information check out the link below.

Thank you for those links and your research this week.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at a map of Italy and all those volcanoes are located on the western and south areas. Most of the northern ones are extinct..I was lucky to visit Sicily and the active Mt. Etna years back...pretty amazing experience. I did not have the impression people there were very concerned with living at the bottom of an active volcano...

Hello Andrew,
ReplyDeleteI found it interesting that Italy is the only volcanically active country in mainland Europe. My country did not have any active volcanoes so Etna and Stromboli in Italy were my closest active volcanoes. It surprised me that many people do not fear living near an active volcano. Great post!
